You can switch to other character instead of playing as protagonist. You can do it using an item known as Special Flag that lets you switch to another character if you are not involved in fight. Slot 1 in your party is set to manual control by default & outside of battle, you can reorganize your party order. You can control the character that is set in Party Slot 1. There is an item known as the Moon Selector that will allow you to change which character you control during fight.
