The game feature a semi-overhead
view with a rotatable camera. Wasteland 2 is a turn based role playing video
game with tactical combat. You can hire 7 characters in your team which
contains 4 playable while 3 non playable characters. You can customize them
with various choice of stats, abilities & appearance which provides them a
customized personality. The characters that are not playable in your team have
their own personality, opinions & agendas.
Wasteland 2: Director’s Cut Gameplay:
The keyboard WASD control are
easy & you can rotate the 3D camera manually which offers more exploration
than the top down camera in early Role Playing Games.
Wasteland 2 is connected to its
prequel & you can notice that when you meet the first NPC. You will find
familiar faces even the game is set 15 years after the original. Wasteland was
difficult to play because you had limited resources. The game
offered real consequences for your actions & your wrong choices could screw
up your game. Wasteland 2 provides more freedom because now you have more resources, med kits & abilities but the rivals are challenging & the
AI is unforgiving.
Wasteland 2 is slow & many
fans might not enjoy it. It is based on turn based combat, there are branching
dialogues that continuously show up & you must also find out the hidden
loot in every mission which may take several hours to finish one mission. But
the good outcome is that when you spend much time preparing each member’s next
move, you will feel a sense of immersion into the job at hand. When your fight
ends, you must make sure to search the complete room while also rotating the
camera all the way around to find every hidden item. Wasteland had limited loot
so it was mandatory to make sure you pick up everything.
When you start playing Wasteland
2 you will find out that it really digs in yourself with lots of customization
including statistics, assigning roles, naming characters, altering their
appearances & determining their back stories. When one of your team mate
dies in fight, you can recruit another which gives you more opportunities to
expand the role play.
You must expect demise because the
game is very unforgiving about casting players into the harsh cursed lands.
Make sure you fight without receiving too many wounds because you may not find
enough healing options as the game offers limited resources.
You will meet allies & rivals
who shape the tale. The game forces you to make decisions which can alter the
story considerably; you can steal from a weapons cache in an allied camp, for
example, it may have penalties, but there is no correct choice & you are
encouraged to proceed with whatever happens to you rather than restarting from
previous save (which is also available in Wasteland 2).
When you are not involved in
combat, you can control each & every member of you team directly &
cycle b/w them with ‘L’ & ‘R’. You may face encounters when rivals see you
& a grid materializes over the field. You can perform all actions during
combat – ranging from basic movement to attacks & reloads which needs
Action Points (AP) to pull off, & each character has a limited AP per turn.
Pulling ‘ZR’ brings up a radial menu of attack options & ‘ZL’ brings up a similar
menu of skills.
Taking cover or crouching helps
you to evade attacks & player can also use friendly fire as a strategy.
Radioing HQ upon victory grants points for players Attributes, Skills &
also grants various Perks. Read info. on loading screens that can be hints
to survive the dust bowl.
Game length can be 50 hours or
even more if you hunt for every character & quests. Traversal between outposts from Arizona &
to California is done through a drab ‘over world’ map that is surrounded by the
fog of battle. You can push a location marker over ‘over world’ map to start or
avoid random battles. Radiation can result in thirst, forcing player to find
oases for water supply.
